We Need More Humans Game Modes

Normal is the two-hour spine. Extras and Endless are the replay layer, not a second campaign.

Game Modes

We Need More Humans ships a mode menu after the title screen. Launch reviews mention Normal, extra / alternate modes, and Endless. They are not a second atlas of biomes. They are rule remixes of the same UFO, the same linear skill tree, and the same hand-crafted towns. If you came here looking for a shared session, stop: every mode is single-player. This page is the missing menu legend the in-game tooltips do not write.

The embedded video is a public 1 September 2026 run of this game (not a trailer). It still teaches the beam-and-spend loop you reuse in every mode. Pair it with how to complete for the Normal finish, and with getting started if you have not abducted anyone yet.

Normal — the campaign you actually buy

Normal is the default. You start in a desert village, travel as you clear, buy the next cheap diamond, and stop when the last population sign hits zero and Game Complete appears. Steam reviews cluster around 90–120 minutes. A launch-week player who liked the idea still complained that Normal finished too fast and wanted four or five hours between locations. That is the split: snack versus campaign. Seafront did not ship the longer campaign.

Normal is also where almost every YouTube playthrough lives. The walkthrough is written against it. The locations atlas is the Normal tour: desert, snow, suburb, dense city, neon night. Extra modes do not replace that tour with a secret Tokyo.

Extra / alternate modes

After Game Complete, the mode menu opens the rest of the box. Launch copy and reviews call them extras or alternates. They remix rules — timers, starting upgrades, how greedy the tree feels — on maps you already know. They are the reason the 1.0 promise of game modes was not empty. They are not a branching skill tree. Matt Cole has been public about keeping the tree linear; extras do not secretly add rival paths.

Play extras if:

  • Normal felt short and you still like the beam.
  • A leftover Steam achievement will not pop. See achievements.
  • You want another pass at crop circles and radioactive crowds without starting from $2 villagers.

Do not play extras expecting a new story. There is no voiced ending in Normal and extras do not invent one.

Endless

Endless is the score-chase cousin. Reviews name it as a post-Normal option. It keeps the abduction loop going after the campaign spine is done. Treat it as a playground for leftover late game nodes: Instant Abduction, arm radius, map-wide gizmos. Population and dollar ticks can still climb; the Game Complete screen is no longer the point.

Endless is a bad first mode. You will not understand Round Time, Crop Circle chance, or why the snow map’s 1.6s clock exists. Clear Normal. Then open Endless if the saucer still feels good.

Customisation sits beside modes, not inside them

The 14 June 2026 demo post promised customisation in the full game. Launch reviews say new saucers and beams are visual only. Changing hulls does not change Beam Capacity. Picking a mode does not magically give cosmetics stats. If a new paint job made Endless faster, we would write it here. It does not.

Demo leftover versus 1.0 modes

The May–June demo had a post-clear skill-tree section with 13 extra upgrades. That was a demo-era replay hook. 1.0 folded more of that content into the main tree plus the mode menu. If an old video ends on a Game Complete list of extra modes promised for the full build, you are watching the demo. Install the full Steam build (app 4436560). Details live on release notes and the demo changelog.

How to pick a mode without overthinking it

  1. First purchase, first evening — Normal. Follow getting started and the early game build.
  2. Sign hits zero, tree is mostly green — Game Complete, then extras if you still want humans.
  3. Leftover badges or a high-score itch — Endless, with the upgrade checklist open.
  4. Still unhappy about the linear tree — extras will not fix that. Read the review and decide whether to wait on the roadmap.

The mode menu looks like a second game. It is the same UFO with the lights rearranged. Fly it anyway if Normal made you laugh. Skip it if Normal already felt like a receipt.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What modes does We Need More Humans have?

Normal, extra/alternate modes, and Endless, all single-player. Normal is the campaign. See how to complete for the finish.

Should I start in Endless?

No. Learn the beam in Normal first. Getting started is the on-ramp.

Do extra modes add a new skill tree?

No. The skill tree stays linear. Modes remix rules, not branches.

Does customisation change mode balance?

Launch reviews say hulls and beams are cosmetic. Power is diamonds, not paint.

Where did the demo’s 13 extra upgrades go?

That was a post-clear demo section. 1.0 moved replay into extras, Endless, and a bigger main tree. Demo changelog.
